I’m only starting to open the pages of the book about me. Something else that none of you know is that I love to read and I particularly enjoy reading poetry. One of my favorite poets/writers is r.h. Sin. He is so real, raw, and relatable that it’s not surprising he has a following of 1.4 million on Instagram.
Last night before I went to be I was reading a few pages of one of his books, and I stumbled across this:
This is the most real think I have ever read regarding social media and I wanted but also felt compelled to share.
I have firsthand experience with how true this is. For my 16th birthday party, I threw a pool party but let’s just say it was much of a pool party thanks to social media. Almost all the girls at my party were just sitting by the pool with their phone in their hand “tanning.” My father had walked by, and he called everyone out and took all of our phones. At first, everyone hated him and were asking what we are supposed to do now, and I just sat there astonished.
It was a beautiful 90 degrees summer day with a large refreshing pool right in front of us. What do you mean what are we gonna do? How about instead of making it look like you were having fun at my party we actually have fun?
I’ve had friends of mine at that party thanked me a while afterward because they had so much more fun than the ever would have trying to take a picture for Instagram that looked like we were all having the time of our lives.
The sad think is though, is nothing has changed, not in the slightest.
I’m currently in college, and that’s all everyone around seems to have learned how to do. To make their life look amazing when in reality it’s not what they make it out to be. Or they spend countless hours scrolling through liking pictures and comparing themselves and their lives to the best life someone has created for themselves on social media.
I will never understand.
I am apart of this generation whose life was built with social media and technology at our backbone, but I don’t understand, I will likely never understand, I and part of this generation, but not in the slightest am I like them.
I enjoy social media to some degree. I love that we can make connections with people and places from around the world at our fingertips. I love being able to look back on my life in pictures because I am an avid lover of photography. I even enjoy how social media can be used as a job if done correctly.
I still will never understand how we live for and through social media.
I challenge all of you who read this to share it, but also to be present. Life will pass you by, and the only parts you will remember are those you were looking through a lease to get the perfect picture.
I would love to know your all’s opinions of social media, please leave a comment down below I would love to know your point of view.
I clearly have a love hate relationship with social media. I just don’t think it’s why most people expect.
Have a wonderful day! And if it’s not lovely, make it so!
